Home Insurance

Home insurance consists of building insurance and contents insurance; and they both do pretty much as they say on the tin. If you own a home, then you should have at least buildings insurance, though not everybody does.
A surprising number of home owners in the UK choose not to purchase buildings or contents cover and many of those who do are underinsured.
Looking at contents cover, one home owner in five has no contents cover at all and 25% of those who do have it have insufficient cover, which means 6.8 million households in total. It is estimated that £200 billion worth of home contents are not covered. In particular people have underestimated the replacement costs of cookware, clothes, curtains, carpets and garden tools.
It has been shown that on average the contents of a wardrobe are worth £10,000. Each house has £4,000 worth of furniture; electrical items valued at £3,000; white goods worth £2,000; jewellery worth £1,800; £1,000 worth of curtains; and £1,200 of gardening implements and other tools. On average people are 30% underinsured.
The danger of not having sufficient contents cover is that any claim could be adjusted downwards to reflect the percentage amount of underinsurance. For instance, if the actual replacement of your contents is £40,000 but you have only covered it for £20,000 then if you claim for a £5,000 loss you might get back only £2,500.
Buildings insurance is compulsory if there is a mortgage on the home but many people who have inherited a home or have paid off their mortgage do not take it out. This was demonstrated when Cumbria was hit by floods in 2009. The damage caused to homes amounted to £275 million and many of them were not insured. Fortunately on that occasion many of these people were helped by charities.
